About

The Start

Cathy started riding in Ann Arbor, Michigan, at age 9 pursuing her love of horses that has lasted a lifetime. She eventually began riding on the Hunter/Jumper “A” circuit, qualifying for the Maclay Medal finals in 1978 at the age of sixteen. She continued winning awards and recognition as a teenager as the top Hunter/Jumper equitation and year end champion in 1979/80.

The Love of Eventing begins

Her love of eventing started as a bit of an accident when jumping cross country as a lark. She was hooked! She began her eventing career in 1982 and has never looked back. Cathy has competed at the CIC** and CCI** as well as Advanced Horse Trials with multiple OTTB and with her most successful horse Medley, a KWPN/TB cross mare. Cathy has continued to excel in eventing, winning multiple yearly professional awards regionally and nationally.

Training and the Pursuit of Excellence

Over the years Cathy has worked to improve her skill set by riding in clinics with top eventers and dressage riders, Captain Mark Phillips, Bruce Davidson, Sinead Halpin, Bruce Mandeville , Doug Payne, Mary D’Arcy and Sara Michaels (“S” Level Dressage Judge) to name a few. In addition she has been certified as a Level II USEA Instructor. Her desire is to be the best whether as a competitor or instructing her clients.

Cathy’s Philosophy

Cathy looks to the training scale as the basis of training the horse, whether on the flat or over fences. She believes in hard work and not taking short-cuts whether training or re-schooling the horses she rides. Students rely on her to get their horses through problems in competing and training by her steady hand and expertise in the competition ring.

Cathy’s love of horses has taken her to re-training off-the-track thoroughbreds. Her current competition horse, HES Hopeful aka “Hope” is a 7 year old, 16.3 bay mare OTTB owned by Cathy. She has completed through Novice level and is schooling Training Level.

Fox hunts and 4-H are other ways she engages her students, both youth and adults. A well rounded rider is the basis for success both in and out of the competition ring. Cathy takes time and care to work with each student starting where they are and helping them reach success through proven methods. She continues to follow this philosophy for herself by her certification as a USEA Level II instructor.
